In Timesheets, you can add comments to your employees’ shifts and view comments left by your employees. You can add and view comments that apply to the whole shift or to specific segments of a shift, such as a project transfer.
Comment Types
Time and attendance features in Dayforce support two types of comments for shifts.
| Comment Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Employee | Employee comments are added by the employee who worked the shift and are viewable by their manager. Dayforce marks these comments with the employee comment icon ( |
| Manager | Manager comments are added by an employee’s manager. Dayforce marks these comments with the manager comment icon ( |
Dayforce uses a different icon to mark shifts that contain both employee and manager comments. When both an employee and a manager add a comment to a shift, Dayforce marks the shift with the employee and manager comment icon ().
Comment Levels
Employees and managers can add comments to their shifts in time and attendance features at one of two levels, depending on your Dayforce configuration.
| Comment Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Shift |
Shift-level comments apply to an entire shift. In the legacy shift editor in Timesheets, you add these comments in the field at the bottom of the dialog box:
In the segment shift editor, you add these comments in the Manager Comments field:

(Segment editor only) Role feature access: Timesheets > Schedule Segments > Editor Segment-level comments apply to specific segments (or, portions) of a shift, such as time worked on a specific project or using a different job assignment:

How Dayforce Shows Comments
Depending on your configuration, Dayforce shows comments differently in grid and duration timesheet features, and some functionality is available only in some timesheet features. For example, in duration timesheet features such as Manager Timesheet, you can add a comment to any row, whether it represents a meal or worked time:
You can add comments to specific shift segments in Timesheets only if the segment shift editor is enabled (that is, if you have access to the Timesheets > Schedule Segments > Editor role feature. See Schedule Segments Overview). However, you can’t add comments to every type of segment. For example, in the segment shift editor in Timesheets, you can’t add a comment to a meal or break. You can add comments to meals and breaks only in duration timesheet features.
If an employee adds multiple comments in a duration timesheet feature, Dayforce applies one comment at the shift level, and adds system-generated transfers to the shift’s details for the other comments:
While these comments are categorized as transfers in Dayforce, they aren’t always actual transfers where an employee’s work details change, such as a project or job transfer. In the example above, the transfer is system-generated and was created to add the employee’s second comment from their duration timesheet. In the timesheets grid, Dayforce adds the transfer icon to note that the shift contains a transfer at 4:15 PM, but this icon isn’t meant to represent a standard transfer. The transfer icon marks the system-generated transfer that was created to add the employee’s second comment:
For more information about standard transfers, see Record Transfers .
