Create Top-Level Projects

A top-level project is an overarching project that contains other individual, related projects, referred to as child projects. For example, you could have a Fall Merchandising top-level project that contains all of the various tasks that need to be performed, represented by child projects.

Child projects are linked to the job assignments that can perform their work. For example, a part of the Fall Merchandising top-level project, the Update Signage child project is assigned several receiving job assignments. Employees working those job assignments can record their time spent updating the store’s signage against the child project. This time and any recorded time for other child projects rolls up, as part of the Fall Merchandising top-level project, and is summarized.

Each top-level project can contain many child projects under it. See Create Child Projects.

Note: Users must create at least one top-level project to use the project management functionality.

To create a top-level project:

  1. Go to Projects and click Add > Top Level Project. Dayforce adds a new top-level project and shows the project’s details in the Details tab.
  2. In the General section:
    • Enter a name, description, and cross-reference code for the project. Cross-reference codes must be unique and must not contain special characters.
    • In the Priority Level field, enter a number that represents the priority level. This number is only for informational and sorting purposes.
    • (US Only) Select an option in the Taxation Address drop-down list to enable project-based taxation for this project. See Project Taxation for US Employees.
    • (US Only) Select the Use Resident Address For Taxation checkbox to specify the employee’s primary residential address as the taxation address. When this checkbox is selected, employees are taxed based on their primary residential address for the earnings that are allocated to a project. If this checkbox is selected, the Taxation Address drop-down list is unavailable.
    • Leave the Clock Code, Ledger Code, and Assignment # fields blank. They’re defined for each child project linked to the top-level project.
  3. In the Date section:
    • Specify the effective date range of the project using the Start Date and Due Date settings. This time period defines the effective date range of the project. Eligible employees can only record worked time against the project during the effective date range.
    • Leave the other fields in this section blank. These fields are populated and used when you complete the project. See Complete Projects.
  4. Click the Assignment tab.
