Create Child Projects

In Projects, you can use child projects to track the budget and work that is performed for different components of a top-level project. Top-level projects can be configured with any number of child projects under them. You can expand the details of each child project by clicking their top-level project. Dayforce summarizes the actual hours and labor cost for each child project.

To create a child project:

  1. Go to Projects and select the top-level project that the child project should fall under.
  2. Click Add > Child Project.
  3. In the General section of the Details tab, configure the following settings:
    • Enter a name and description of the child project.
    • (Optional) If employees are going to record time against the project at the clocks, specify a code in the Clock Code field. Clock codes are a set of digits that the clocks use to identify the different projects. The number of digits depends on how the clocks are configured.
    • (Optional) In the XRef Code field, enter a cross-reference code. This code must be unique and must not contain special characters.
    • (Optional) In the Priority Level field, enter a number that represents the priority level. This number is only for informational and sorting purposes.
    • (Optional) In the Ledger Code field, enter the ledger account associated with this job so that Dayforce associates the pay amounts for each job with the appropriate general ledger account. This information can be exported with the Payroll GL Export background job.
    • (Optional) In the Account # field, enter an account number. This field is only for informational use and is shown in reports generated in Projects.
    • (Optional) Select the IFRS Classification checkbox to designate the account number entered in the Account # field as an IFRS standardized account. This field is only for informational use and appears in reports generated in Projects.
    • (US Only) Select an option in the Taxation Address drop-down list to enable project-based taxation for this project. See Project Taxation for US Employees.
    • (US Only) Select the Use Resident Address For Taxation checkbox to specify the employee’s primary residential address as the taxation address. When this checkbox is selected, employees are taxed based on their primary residential address for the earnings that are allocated to a project. If this checkbox is selected, the Taxation Address drop-down list is unavailable.
  4. (Optional) In the Date section:
    • Use the Start Date and Due Date settings to specify the effective date range of the child project. Eligible employees can only record worked time against the child project during the effective date range.
    • Leave the other fields in this section blank. These fields are populated and used when you complete the project.
  5. (Optional) In the Budgeted and Actual section:
    • In the Budgeted Hours field, enter the child project’s budgeted hours.
    • In the Budgeted Amount field, enter the child project’s total budget.
  6. Click the Assignment tab, and configure the following in the Organization Assignment section:
    • In the Organization field, specify the organizational unit that the child project is assigned to. Projects are available to eligible employees in the selected locations.
    • The Parent Project field should show the top-level project you selected in the side panel. If necessary, you can select a different top-level project to assign the child project to.
  7. (Optional) In the Project Assignment section, select a project client, a project type, and a project phase.
  8. (Optional) In the Product Assignment section, select a product group and a product module.
  9. In the Employee Assignment drop-down list, select the employees you want to add to the child project. See Add Employees to Projects.
  10. In the Job Assignment drop-down list, select the jobs that can work on the child project.
  11. Note: If you don’t select any jobs, the project is available for all jobs.
  12. Click the Pay Code Setup tab, and configure the following in the Pay Code Charges for Project section:
    • In the Charge Against Project Time drop-down list, select the pay codes that contribute to project time.
    • In the Charge Against Project Cost drop-down list, select the pay codes that contribute project cost.
  13. Not all pay codes should contribute to both project time and project cost. For example, counting the hours associated with premium pay codes against project time can result in these hours being counted twice. To prevent this, you can configure Dayforce so that it counts the costs associated with premiums with project cost, but not the hours. For example, to configure the project so that overtime costs are charged against project cost, but the associated hours aren’t, in the Charge Against Project Cost field, select the pay code that marks overtime. When you define the projects that contribute to project hours in the Charge Against Project Time, don’t select the pay code that marks overtime.
  14. Click Save.
