Org Pickers

Org Pickers

Throughout Dayforce, there are org pickers that contain a hierarchy of your organization’s locations. You use org pickers to load data or information that applies only to specific org units. Org units represent the different levels of your organizational hierarchy, such as sites, stores, districts, or departments. Depending on your organization’s configuration, you might not have access to some org units.

Dayforce has two different types of org pickers:

Navigation Panel Org Picker

This org picker appears at the top of the navigation panel:

Org picker at the top of the navigation panel.

Dayforce shows the org picker whenever you expand the navigation panel, regardless of the feature that you select. However, not all features use the org picker (for example, the Home feature). When you hover the cursor over it, the cursor is an arrow (see the preceding image). If you select a feature that uses this org picker (for example, Schedules) and hover the cursor over it, the cursor becomes a hand:

When you click the org picker, you can view a list of your organization’s locations. Use the icons to expand or collapse sections. This screenshot illustrates a partially expanded list in the org picker:

To select a location, click the org picker, find the location that you want shown, and then select it. When you click Select, the org picker updates to show the new selection:

Feature-Specific Org Pickers

Many features and elements contain their own org pickers that dictate which locations you load or generate data for. These org pickers are paired with an org unit field (typically named Organization or Location). Beside this field, there’s an org picker icon () that you can click to choose your locations in a dialog box:

Org picker dialog box with org units selected.

The dialog box shows the location hierarchy configured for your organization.

Note: Remember, depending on your organization’s configuration, you might not have access to some locations.

For some org pickers, you can select only one location. Additionally, some org pickers require that you select org units that are at the bottom of the organizational hierarchy.

After you select one or more org units and click OK, Dayforce shows them in the org unit field:

If you selected an expandable org unit that has additional org units nested below it in the hierarchy, Dayforce shows only the selected org unit in the org unit field. However, depending on the feature, the org unit’s nested org units are also included when you load or generate data. Consider this org unit:

Hierarchy showing Contractor Co. USA org unit with two org units nested below it.

The Contractor Co. USA org unit has two org units nested below it: Chicago and Minneapolis. You want to view pay group calendars for both Chicago and Minneapolis in the Pay Admin Checklist feature. This feature has an Organization filter so that you can limit the number of locations that Dayforce loads data for. After you select the Contractor Co. USA org unit and click OK, the Organization field shows only “Contract Co. USA.” Because the selected org unit has org units nested below it, Dayforce loads data for Contractor Co. USA, Chicago, and Minneapolis:

Pay Admin Checklist with the Organization filter applied.

Note: Some org units are used to group together different locations or sites and won’t typically have any employees or data assigned to them.

There are two different org pickers that appear in features throughout Dayforce. These two org pickers are similar but contain a few functional differences:

Feature org pickers
Org Picker Description
Legacy org picker

Example:

Legacy org picker in a dialog box.

This org picker is identifiable by its plus and minus icons that expand and collapse the hierarchy.

When you use the search field, Dayforce shows search results while you type. There’s no button to initiate your search after you finish typing your criteria.

Enhanced org picker

Example:

Enhanced org picker in a dialog box.

This org picker is identifiable by the drop-down arrow icons that expand and collapse the hierarchy.

To improve Dayforce performance, this org picker shows only the first 1,000 org units in your hierarchy. To locate an org unit that isn’t within the initial loaded set, use the search field. Dayforce indicates when there are 1,000 org units or more by suggesting that you type in the search field to refine the criteria.

Unlike the legacy org picker, this org picker’s search field doesn’t show results while you type. You must click Search for Dayforce to initiate the search and show results.

This org picker updates dynamically based on your selection. For example, if you select an org unit, click OK, and then re-open the org picker, it shows only the org units that you previously selected. The selected org units are shown with any org units that are nested under them in the hierarchy, but you can’t expand the hierarchy beyond the next nested level:

In this scenario, to locate any org units that aren’t shown, use the search field. To view the entire organizational hierarchy again, you can collapse and expand the top org unit. Alternatively, you can clear the selected locations in the org unit field to view the entire hierarchy again in the org picker.
