When you need to end-date a position's location and that location is an occupant’s primary location, you must transfer the occupant to a new location so that their assignment continues.

For example, John Smith is assigned to the Store Manager position with Toronto as his primary location, effective January 1. A new location, Markham, is added to the Store Manager position effective May 1, and the Toronto location is end-dated on that same date. As a result, Markham becomes John’s new primary location starting on May 1.

In this scenario, you need to transfer John to the Markham location for his Store Manager position. To complete the transfer:

  1. Add the new secondary location (Markham) to the position and save the changes. The effective date of this location should match the transfer date (May 1).
  2. Swap John’s primary and secondary locations, effective on the transfer date of May 1. After the swap, Markham becomes the primary location and Toronto becomes secondary, effective May 1. See Manage Position Occupants.
  3. End date the Toronto location as of the transfer date to remove it from John’s secondary location assignments.
