Business units form the functional structure of the organization that keeps track of filled and vacant positions. You can build a business unit hierarchy that represents a functional structure that is separate from actual locations.
You can build and manage your organization’s business units in the Business Units screen of Organization Designer. The hierarchy represents a functional structure that’s separate from locations. Each card in the hierarchy shows the metrics for a business unit in your organization:
The icon at the top right of the card and the Filled/Vacant bar show the number of positions assigned to the business unit. If the business unit has others nested under it, the Roll Up Information section shows the aggregated information for all of the business units under the selected one. In the preceding screenshot, the Operations business unit has 3 positions assigned to it, with 2 filled and 1 vacant. The business units nested under it have 312 total positions, with 97% of them filled and 3% vacant.
You can move a business unit in the hierarchy by clicking and dragging it to a new location. When you move a business unit in this way, the date of the change depends on the date selected in the as of date field. For example, to move a business unit starting June 1st, set the as of date field to 6/1, and then move the card. Doing so might update the business unit's metrics, depending on where you place it. If it’s at the lowest level of the hierarchy, no metrics are updated because the positions don’t change. However, the roll-up information of the new parent business unit is updated, even though it's not the one you moved.
You can delete a business unit if it has never had any positions assigned to it—currently, in the past, or with a future date. When you delete a business unit that has units nested under it in the hierarchy, all of the business units under it are also deleted.
