Ireland Pension Auto-Enrolment

Before You Begin: You must register on the NAERSA Employer Portal before you can configure Ireland pension auto-enrolment in Dayforce.

The auto-enrolment national pension savings scheme, also called My Future Fund, is designed to increase retirement savings for employees through mandatory pension contributions. Employees who meet the age and earnings thresholds, and don’t have existing supplementary pension coverage, are automatically enrolled. Under the scheme, the employee, employer, and government all contribute to the employee’s pension fund.

For more information, see https://www.gov.ie/en/department-of-social-protection/campaigns/auto-enrolment/.

When you calculate payroll, Dayforce receives enrolment information for the employees in the pay run from the National Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings Authority (NAERSA). The information includes the employee eligibility assessment results such as the employee’s Automatic Enrolment Payment Notification (AEPN) number, AEPN enrolment date, enrolment status, and the employee/employer contribution rates. This data is used to calculate the employee and employer pension contributions. You can preview the total deduction amounts in Payroll > Pay Run Management, in the Summary tab.

When you commit the pay run, the contribution file is submitted to the NAERSA. You can view the submission status in Payroll > Pay Run Management, in the NAERSA Submission tab. In Payroll > Archived Reports, you can download the contribution file in JSON format.

When you add or remove a termination date in an employee profile, Dayforce reports the change in the NAERSA file submission in the following ways:

  • When you add a termination date that is on or after the payroll commit date, Dayforce reports the actual termination date to NAERSA.
  • When you add a termination date that is before the payroll commit date, Dayforce reports the payroll commit date to NAERSA.
  • When you delete the termination date from the employee's profile, Dayforce reports the deletion to NAERSA when the next pay run is committed.

The payslip shows the employee and employer pension contribution amounts that are paid in full and any shortfalls that were paid off in that pay period. When terminated employees who were auto-enrolled in the national pension scheme received pay after the termination date, Dayforce calculates pension contributions on those wages. The pension contributions (employer and employee) are shown on the payslip.

Set Up Pension Auto-Enrolment

The following steps outline how to configure a pension auto-enrolment scheme in Dayforce:

  1. Configure the pay group to retrieve the Automatic Enrolment Payroll Notification (AEPN) automatically at payroll calculation by enabling a setting in Pay Setup > Pay Group.
  2. When the setting is enabled, Dayforce fetches AEPN at the payroll calculation stage in both normal and off-cycle pay runs. See Retrieve AEPN from NAERSA.
  3. Set up the benefits plan and option for the pension scheme in Benefits Setup > Plans and Options. See Add an Ireland Pension Auto-Enrolment Benefits Plan.
  4. Add a deduction code for employee contributions and a memo deduction code for employer pension contributions. See Ireland Pension Auto-Enrolment Deduction Codes.
  5. Create a payroll policy rule. See Apply IRL Pension Auto Enrolment Rule.
  6. Give user roles access to AEPN information in employee records in People. See Application Container in the Dayforce Implementation Guide.
