Appendix: Canadian Pay Period Gap Rules

A payroll administrator or HR administrator of Canadian organizations is required to enter the pay period type for an employee when issuing an employee's Record of Employment (ROE).

List of pay period types used in ROE forms
Pay Period Type Code (Block 6 of ROE) Description Details
B Biweekly

Cannot have more than two consecutive pay periods with no earnings

2 pay periods x 14 days = 28 days

M Monthly

Cannot have more than one pay period with no earnings

1 pay period x 30 days = 30 days

O Monthly Non-Standard

Cannot have more than one pay period with no earnings

1 pay period x 30 days = 30 days

S Semi-Monthly

Cannot have more than two consecutive pay periods with no earnings

2 pay period x 15 days = 30 days

E Semi-Monthly Non-Standard

Cannot have more than two consecutive pay periods with no earnings

2 pay period x 15 days = 30 days

H Thirteen Pay Periods Per Year

Cannot have more than one pay period with no earnings

1 pay period x 28 days = 28 days

W Weekly

Cannot have more than four consecutive pay periods with no earnings

4 pay period x 7 days = 28 days
