If applicable for the type of garnishment and its issuing province, the application displays the Apply Handling Fees checkbox in the Additional Details section of the Properties tab for the garnishment. If a handling fee isn’t applicable, the application hides this checkbox.
Generally, this checkbox is only displayed for summons garnishments. For Yukon and Prince Edward Island, it is also displayed for the family garnishment type.
Select the checkbox if your organization deducts a one-time fee (and, in the case of Yukon, an ongoing fee of $5.00 which is applied to each garnishment deduction) for administering the garnishment order. This fee varies from province to province.
When you select the Apply Handling Fees checkbox, the application displays the following fields:
- Default One Time Handling Fee Amount: A read-only field that displays the default one-time fee amount.
- Override One Time Handling Fee Amount: You can enter an amount to override the default one-time fee, if needed.
- Default Ongoing Handling Fee Amount (Applicable for Yukon only): A read-only field that displays the default ongoing fee amount.
- Override Ongoing Handling Fee Amount (Applicable for Yukon only): You can enter an amount to override the default ongoing fee, if needed.
The handling fee is applied in one of two ways, depending on the type of garnishment and its issuing province. The first method is to subtract the fee from the garnishment amount directly. The second is to add the fee as a post-tax deduction against the employee’s payment.
The following is an example of an earning statement with a garnishment deduction and a one-time handling fee. The application adds a separate post-tax deduction to the employee's pay, and the name of the deduction describes the fee type:
