Pre-Start Status for New Hires

When you hire an employee with a future hire date using a form or the HR Import, Dayforce automatically generates a work assignment and a Pre-Start employment status record effective from the day the employee was added to the day before the hire date.

Before You Begin: The pre-start status is applicable only for employees who are new hires, and not for rehired employees.

For example, if a New Hire form is processed on July 31 with a hire date of August 27, Dayforce generates the following records in the new employee’s profile:

  • A work assignment and Pre-Start employment status record effective from July 31 to August 26.
  • A work assignment and employment status record effective from August 27 (the hire date) and onward.

The following are the records added in the Work > Work Assignments screen of People:

Onboarding Date

If your organization uses the Onboarding feature, you can also specify an onboarding date when hiring an employee. The following is an example of the Hire Date and Onboarding Date fields in the New Hire form:

The onboarding date defines when the processes in the Onboarding feature start. The onboarding date doesn't affect when the pre-start employment status or work assignment become effective (these records become effective on the day that the employee was added to Dayforce).

Using the previous example where a New Hire form was processed on July 31 with a hire date of August 27, say that you enter an onboarding date of August 13. As a result, although the employee's work assignment and Pre-Start status become effective on July 31, processes in the Onboarding feature start on August 13. The Onboarding role selected in the New Hire form is effective from August 13 to August 26, so that the new employee can start accessing Dayforce through that role during the onboarding period.
