You can assign the next primary location for an employee who occupies a position when they move to a new location. This functionality is used for scenarios like location transfers, in-seat promotions, or to fix an incorrectly assigned primary location.
When you assign the next primary location, Dayforce updates the work assignment records for all employees who occupy that position. The changes could affect multiple people if the position is pooled or has overfill enabled, or if it has an interim occupant.
The steps below include adding the new location to the position, and then assigning it as the next primary location for the occupant. If the location is already added to the position, you can skip steps 5 and 6 and proceed to assigning it to the occupant.
To assign the next primary location for a position’s occupant:
- Go to Organization Designer and open the Positions screen.
- Click the position to open the position panel.
- Go to the Occupants tab and review the active locations. If the new location isn’t yet assigned to the position, you add it in steps 5 and 6.
- Go to the Information > Job Information tab.
- If you need to assign the new location to the position, click Add Location.
- Select the next location in the Location Name field, enter the effective date, and click Update. The new location is assigned to the position as a secondary location. Continue to the next step to assign it as the next primary location.
- Click the actions icon for the primary location and select Edit.
- Enter the end date for the current location, and then click Update. If the position has only one other location available, Dayforce adds it as the next primary position starting from the day after the end date, and you see a confirmation notification at the bottom of the screen. If there are multiple other locations available, Dayforce prompts you to select the next location.
- If you’re prompted to select a location, click the checkbox for the next primary location, and click Update.
- Click Save.
The next primary location is added to the work assignment records for all employees who occupy the position.
You can also add next primary locations for positions in the Position Import using the <NextPrimaryLocation> entity. For more information, download the Dayforce Interface Specifications ZIP file and see the Dayforce Position Import Specification document.
