Assign Work Patterns

After you assign an employee a work contract, you can assign them a work pattern. Work patterns define the days of the week that the employee works and what hours they work on those days. In People, in the Work > Work Contracts screen, the Work Pattern Details tab lists the parameters that define the employee’s work pattern:

List of work pattern details.

To view work patterns in the Work Pattern Details tab, expand the related work contract. You can also view the tab by entering a number in the Length in Days field in the Primary Work Contract section.

Note: You can’t view the Work Pattern Details tab unless you select a work contract in the Work Contract field in the Primary Work Contract section. Additionally, the tab doesn’t show a work pattern if there’s no value in the Length in Days field.

To specify an employee’s work pattern, do the following for each day of the week:

  1. Go to People, open the employee profile, and click Work > Work Contracts.
  2. In the Primary Work Contract section, expand the work contract record. Dayforce displays the Work Pattern Details tab, by default.
  3. In the Shift Type drop-down list, select an option:
    • Off: The employee doesn’t work on that day.
    • Fixed Hours: The employee works a specific number of hours on that day, but doesn’t work them at a specific time.
    • Shift: The employee works a specific number of hours on that day, at a specific time. When you select this option, users can automatically populate schedules with this shift on this day of the week.
  4. To specify the hours the employee works on that day of the week, do one of the following:
    • If you selected Shift in the Shift Type drop-down list, use the Start Time and End Time fields to specify the employee’s shift times for that day.
    • If you selected Fixed Hours in the Shift Type drop-down list, enter the number of hours that the employee works on that day in the Net Hours field.
  5. Note: If you select Shift in the Shift Type drop-down list and specify the Start Time and End Time, Dayforce automatically populates the Gross Hours, Unpaid Hours, and Net Hours columns using the meal and break information from the employee’s time entry policy. If you select Fixed Hours in the Shift Type drop-down list and enter a value in the Net Hours field, Dayforce automatically populates the Gross Hours and Unpaid Hours fields.
  6. (Optional) By default, Dayforce uses an employee’s primary work assignment for any days that an employee works. To specify a different work assignment, select it in the Work Assignment drop-down list. Dayforce automatically updates the Job Assignment and Organization Unit drop-down lists with information from the selected work assignment.
  7. (Optional) In the Location Type drop-down list, select the location type that Dayforce applies to shifts that it creates for work patterns on this day of the week.
  8. Click Save.
