Assign Managers to Specific Employees

In the Managers section of the Work > Management Assignments screen in People, you can assign managers to specific employees. You would do this if an employee is managed by someone other than their location’s manager.

Before You Begin: The Restrict Management Assignments role feature controls which employees are available in the Manager drop-down list. When this feature is enabled, the Manager drop-down list shows only employees who you have access to in Dayforce. For example, you can’t select a manager from a location that you don’t have access to. When this feature isn’t enabled, the Manager drop-down list shows all of the employees in the organization.

Role feature access: Application Container > People > Employee Profile > Work > Management Assignments > Managers > Restrict Management Assignments

For example, Amanda’s primary work assignment is at the Bayview location. By default, Amanda is managed by the Bayview location’s manager, Stephanie, through the derived by org mode. If you need a different user to manage Amanda, you would assign Amanda a direct manager. When you do this, the direct manager replaces Stephanie as Amanda’s manager.

The Managers section shows the managers that the employee reports to. Managers who are assigned to the employee through the org (they manage the location at which the employee works) are grayed out to indicate that they can’t be edited. The Derivation Method column shows By Org for these managers:

When you add a new manager record, the Derivation Method column of the record shows Direct and can’t be changed. When you save this record, Dayforce automatically end dates the management by org record as of the day that the new record becomes effective:

To assign a direct manager to an employee:

  1. Go to People, open the employee profile, and click Work > Management Assignments.
  2. In the Managers section, click Add.
  3. In the Manager drop-down list, select the user who will manage the employee.
  4. Enter effective dates.
  5. Click Save.
