What is an SSN?

In the US, a Social Security Number (SSN) is a unique 9-digit identification number assigned to US citizens, permanent residents, and some temporary residents by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The primary purpose of an SSN is to track individuals for Social Security purposes, such as administering benefits, but it is also widely used for identification purposes in various other contexts, including employment, taxation, banking, and credit reporting.
