How Career Opportunities Are Found

The Career Explorer feature lets employees view opportunities for career change and career advancement. Depending on the type of opportunity the employee selects, the feature shows a selection of job assignments that are found as follows:

  • Advancement opportunities are found based on the employee's primary job assignment, and the historical career paths of other employees in the same role in the organization. For example, a software developer is promoted to Senior Software Developer. Following this promotion, all software developers are shown Senior Software Developer as a potential advancement opportunity. If that senior software developer is then promoted to Lead Software Developer, employees with the Software Developer role are shown both Senior Software Developer and Lead Software Developer as advancement opportunities.
  • Career change opportunities are found based on the employee's skills. These opportunities aren’t limited to a particular department or historical career paths in the organization. For example, an employee who has project management as a skill is shown all job assignments for which project management is required. The order in which the opportunities are shown depends on how many of the other required skills the employee has.

The opportunities shown to employees in Career Explorer represent possible job assignments in the organization, but might not be associated with current job postings. The suggestions are intended to help employees build the skills that are required for certain positions so that they're prepared to apply for those positions when they become available.
