Configure Parameters

You can configure parameters for your report and then use them as the Compare To value for filters, relationships, and in custom fields. This saves time and prevents errors when using the same values in multiple places.

You can view the parameters for a report in the Parameters slide-out panel when you click Parameters in the report designer. Advanced report writers can also create parameters and edit existing ones in this tab.

Note: You need to have the Reporting and Analytics > Reporting > Report Designer > Dataset Builder role feature enabled for your user role to create and edit parameters. Users who have access to the report designer but no access to the dataset builder can only view parameters and update the Value field.

If the report is based on a topic, some parameters could be configured at the topic level. If you edit or delete topic-level parameters, the report is detached from the topic. Further, some reports contain parameters configured at the entity level. Entity-level parameters aren’t editable; you can view them in the Parameters slide-out panel, but you can update only the Value column.

To configure a parameter:

  1. Go to Reporting and Analytics > Reporting > Reports.
  2. In the report designer, click Parameters to open the Parameters slide-out panel
  3. Click Add.
  4. In the Group Name field, enter a group name for the parameter. This is a user-friendly name that is shown in the Run dialog box when you run the report. Parameters that have the same group name and data type are grouped automatically. To ungroup parameters, change the group name or the data type and Dayforce automatically ungroups them.
  5. In the Parameter Name field, enter a name for the parameter. Parameters must be preceded with an @ symbol, and if you don’t include it, Dayforce adds the symbol after you save. The parameter name can be used in the Custom Field Editor and is shown in the Compare To field in the Filters slide-out panel.
  6. In the Data Type column, select a data type for the parameter in the drop-down list.
  7. (For Date parameters only) In the Operator drop-down list, select the option that applies to the parameter.
  8. (For Reference parameters only) In the Entity drop-down list, select the reference entity and field for the parameter. After you select the entity, Dayforce shows a second drop-down list of fields to select. After you select a field, a third drop-down allows you to select whether the parameter should allow a single value selection or multiple selections.
  9. In the Value drop-down list, select a value for the parameter. You must include a value if you don’t select the Editable checkbox.
  10. Select the Editable checkbox to allow users to enter a new value when they run the report. You must include a value for the parameter if you don’t make it editable.
  11. Select the Required checkbox and users must provide a value for this parameter to run the report. You must make the parameter editable before you can make it required.

Remove Parameters

You can delete topic-level and report-level parameters by selecting the parameter in the list and clicking trash can icon in the Parameters slide-out panel.

The following exceptions apply when removing parameters:

  • You can’t remove entity-level parameters in the Parameters slide-out panel. Entity-level parameters are shown in gray to indicate that they can’t be removed. The only way to remove them is to delete the associated entity from the report's dataset.
  • You can’t remove topic-level parameters if they’re being used in filters or relationships. If the parameter is being used in a filter or relationship, Dayforce shows an error message when you try to remove it.
  • To delete any grouped parameters, you must remove the individual parameters first before you can delete the group.
