Weekend Overtime Rule

The Weekend Overtime Rule is used to pay employees higher pay rates for any time worked beyond a certain daily threshold on the weekend. For example, you could use the rule to pay employees double-time whenever they work longer than 10 hours a day on the weekend.

The rule is created by using the settings of the Daily Overtime Rule with the Day Qualifier.

Weekend Overtime Rule Example

Example 1: Business Needs

Employees earn a bonus $5 an hour premium whenever they work more than 6 hours on Saturday or Sunday, paid on top of any regular daily overtime. Employees earn regular daily overtime, paid at time and a half, whenever they work more than 8 hours a day.

Example 1: Configuration

Configure two instances of the Daily Overtime Rule and attach the Day Qualifier to the rule configured as the Weekend Overtime Rule. To configure the Daily Overtime Rule for this example:

  1. Enter 480 in the Number of minutes required to be worked field.
  2. In the Pay Category to assign for overtime drop-down list, click OT 1.5.
  3. In the Rate type drop-down list, click Multiplier.
  4. In the Rate output drop-down list, click BlendedRate.
  5. In the Pay Codes eligible drop-down list, click WRK.
  6. In the Pay Categories eligible drop-down list, click REG.

Weekend Overtime Rule Configuration

The second instance of the Daily Overtime Rule is configured as the Weekend Overtime Rule. To configure the Weekly Overtime Rule:

  1. Enter 360 in the Number of minutes required to be worked field.
  2. In the Rate type drop-down list, click Incremental.
  3. Enter 5 in the Rate value field.
  4. In the Pay Category to assign for overtime drop-down list, select the appropriate pay category. In this example, Weekend OT is selected.
  5. In the Rate output drop-down list, click SeparatePremium.
  6. Because weekend overtime can be paid on top of other overtime, leave the Pay Categories eligible and Pay Categories not eligible settings blank.
  7. Add the Day Qualifier so that the Weekend Overtime Rule runs only on the weekend.
  8. Click the Sunday and Saturday checkboxes.

Example 1: Results

In this example result, the employee works 9 hours on Saturday and takes a 30-minute break.

Example of a 9 hour shift with a 30 minute break.

On Saturday, the Weekend Overtime Rule runs and finds 9 hours of eligible time, based on the WRK pay code, which was selected in the rule’s Pay Code eligible field. 3 hours of the eligible time is beyond the 6-hour threshold, so the rule pays the employee a 3-hour premium at $5 an hour.

Weekly overtime awarded.

This premium is paid against the Weekend OT pay category, to distinguish it from regular daily overtime.

The first instance of the Daily Overtime Rule is configured to pay overtime after 8 hours of work on any day. The work on Saturday exceeds the threshold by 1 hour, so the rule pays the last hour at the higher time and a half pay rate.

Daily overtime awarded.

This overtime is paid under the Daily OT pay category, to distinguish it from the weekend overtime.
