Unfilled Shifts Rule

The Unfilled Shifts Rule schedules key or mandatory shifts that should always be included on a zone’s schedule during labor deployment, such as mechanic shifts in the Automotive zone. The labor hours for these shifts are deducted from the zone’s labor pool, so that as Dayforce allocates and distributes labor, it allocates the labor pool minus any labor hours reserved for unfilled shifts.

For example, a location’s plan dictates that the Automotive zone has 35 hours in the labor pool. The Unfilled Shifts Rule is configured to schedule an 8-hour unfilled shift with the mechanic job assignment during the day. When the Labor Spread Rule runs, deploying the zone’s labor, it can allocate only up to 27 hours to the zone (35 in the pool minus 8 for the unfilled shift).

Unfilled Shifts Rule settings
Setting Description
# Shifts Needed The number of shifts that you want scheduled during the time period specified by the rule’s settings. You can also use an expression in this setting. See the Expression Builder Guide.
Time Period Start Basis

Defines how the start time of the unfilled shifts is determined:

  • Open: The start time is relative to the start of the operating hours for the day.
  • Fixed: The start time is a fixed time defined in the Time Start setting.
  • Close: The start time is relative to the end of the operating hours for the day.
  • TimeRange: The start time is based on a location daily property that’s configured with the Time Range data type.
Start Adjustment (minutes) The number of minutes to offset the start of the unfilled shifts, based on the start time that you select in the Time Period Start Basis drop-down list. To offset to an earlier start time, enter a negative value. To offset to a later start time, enter a positive value.
Time Start If you selected Fixed in the Time Period Start Basis drop-down list, enter the specific time that the unfilled shifts starts.
Time Period End Basis

Defines how the end time of the unfilled shifts is determined. Select one of the following values:

  • Open: The end time is relative to the start of the operating hours for the day.
  • Fixed: The end time is a fixed time defined in the Time End setting.
  • Close: The end time is relative to the end of the operating hours for the day.
  • TimeRange: The end time is based on a location daily property that’s configured with the Time Range data type.
End Adjustment (minutes) The number of minutes to offset the end of the unfilled shifts, based on the end time that you select in the Time Period End Basis drop-down list. To offset to an earlier end time, enter a negative value. To offset to a later end time, enter a positive value.
Time End If you selected Fixed in the Time Period End Basis drop-down list, enter the specific time that the unfilled shifts ends.
Activity The activity that’s scheduled to the unfilled shifts.
