Shift Rotation Settings

After you set up shift definitions and labor metrics in Scheduling Plan, you need to link them together in a repeating pattern of shifts and labor metric definitions. This creates a shift rotation that managers can then assign to their employees so that Dayforce automatically schedules employees according to their rotation each week.

In Scheduling Plan > Shift Setup, in the Shift Rotation tab, you can configure the shift rotations that organizations can assign to their employees (see Configure Shift Rotations). This tab contains a number of settings, which are divided by section.

General settings
Setting Description
Name The shift rotation name.
Description (Optional) The shift rotation description.
Organization (Optional) The organizations that the shift rotation applies to.
Rotation Days The number of days in the shift rotation.
Create Shift on Holidays (Optional) Assign the shift in the rotation even if it’s a holiday. Clear the checkbox and the rotation skips holidays.
Day The day that the shift rotation starts on. This is a read only field based on the selection in the Effective From field.
Effective From The shift rotation’s start date. When shift rotations are assigned, they must start on the same day of the week as this date. Shift rotations, by default, start on 1/1/1900, a Monday, so that when users assign shift rotations, they know to always start them on a Monday. If you select a different effective start date, ensure that the individual who assigns shift rotations knows what day of the week they must start on.
Effective To

(Optional) The shift rotation’s end date.

Note: The Effective From and Effective To fields are for your records only. To invalidate a shift rotation for an employee, you must unassign the employee from the shift rotation in the Shift Rotation drop-down list in the Employment > Employment Settings screen of People.

Reference Code (Optional) The cross-reference code associated with the shift rotation. This code must be unique and must not contain special characters.
Business Day Start

(Optional) The business day alignment time (BDA). If you define a BDA at the shift rotation level, it overrides any BDAs that are configured at the pay group or organization level. After you click Save, this field is grayed out and can’t be edited.

Note: To apply a BDA at the shift rotation level, you must clear the Basic business day calculation client property. See General.

Holiday Start Time The holiday start time for the shift rotation. When you enter a time, it overrides the BDA settings and the holiday start time defined in Pay Setup > Holiday Group.
  • Shift Start Tolerance
  • Shift End Tolerance
  • (Optional) The shift start and end thresholds. If an employee clocks in or out within the threshold, their entire shift is counted toward one business day. For example, say that a shift rotation has a BDA of 10:00 PM and a shift start and shift end tolerance of 120 minutes. If an employee clocks in at 9:00 PM on Monday and works an 8-hour shift, all 8 hours are counted as worked on Tuesday because they clocked in within the tolerance threshold. Similarly, if an employee clocks out from an 8-hour shift at 11:00 PM on Monday, all of the hours would be counted as worked on Monday, because the clock entry is within the shift end tolerance threshold. On the other hand, if the employee clocks in at 7:00 PM, before the shift start tolerance, the first three hours that are before the BDA are counted as worked on Monday, and the rest are counted on Tuesday.
