This section describes how to create and configure the entitlements that make up your organization’s benefit policies. Each entitlement applies to a single balance, or benefit, such as vacation time, sick days, personal days, or any form of benefit time that your organization tracks.
For each entitlement, you set which employees qualify to earn the associated balance, based on a variety of criteria, such as years of service or worked hours. You can also configure how employees qualify to earn the same balance at different rates.
Each entitlement links a balance, such as vacation days, to recurrences, such as once a year or once every six months, with a set of attached rules and qualifiers. With a hierarchy of rules and qualifies, Dayforce determines which employees earn the balance according to your organization’s configuration and needs.

Before you can create and configure entitlements, you need to have already created balances in Dayforce. See Balance Settings. Additionally, you need to have configured the recurrences that dictate how often employees earn balances or have them rolled over or paid out. See Recurrences.
At a high-level, setting up entitlements involves the following process:
- Adding the entitlement to Dayforce.
- Choosing which employees qualify for the entitlement.
- Configuring how much of the balance employees earn at each recurrence.
- Choosing what happens to employee balances when they roll over.
This is controlled through levels, rules, and qualifiers:
Entitlement Component | Description |
---|---|
Level |
Levels (or, rulesets) are used to group employees who are eligible to earn the same amount of the entitlement’s balance. For each group of employees who earn a balance, for example vacation days, at a different rate, you need to add a separate level to the vacation days entitlement. An entitlement’s levels are also used to group together employees who have the same balance rollover behavior. If part-time employees lose their vacation days at the end of the year but full-time employees have any remaining vacation days paid out, you need at least two entitlement levels, one for each group. |
Rule |
Rules are assigned to each level to dictate what happens to the entitlement’s balance at each of its recurrences and rollover recurrences. |
Qualifier | Qualifiers are assigned to each level, or to the entitlement rules themselves, to dictate when employees are eligible to receive them. |
