Period Days Rule Example

In this example, employees are entitled to a premium for extra hours worked after they work eight shifts that exceed 10 hours in length, in a four-week period.

After this threshold is met, employees are eligible for a premium for any extra hours worked above 10 hours for the remainder of the period (four weeks, in this example), even if the extra hours are scheduled. For example, if an employee works a ninth shift that is 11 hours long, one hour qualifies for a premium.

Note: In this scenario, when you schedule an employee for a ninth shift that exceeds 10 hours in length, Dayforce shows a maximum violation error in the Problems panel of Schedules.

To configure the rule based on the example above:

  1. In the Evaluation Period drop-down list, select 4.
  2. Enter a period start date.
  3. In the Period Type drop-down list, select Distinct Period or Rolling Period.
  4. In the Max Threshold field, enter 8.
  5. In the Days must have more than field, enter 600.
  6. Select the Use actuals for prior days checkbox.
  7. Select the Include Sunday, Include Monday, Include Tuesday, Include Wednesday, Include Thursday, Include Friday, and Include Saturday checkboxes.
  8. (Optional) Using the Included/Excluded Shift Pay Adj Codes and Include/Exclude Pay Adjustment Pay Codes drop-down lists, select the shift pay adjustment and pay adjustment pay codes that the rule should include or exclude.

With this configuration, an employee earns a premium for any worked hours that exceed the 10-hour threshold in a day when they’ve worked eight days that exceed the 10-hour threshold. After the eight-day threshold is reached, any extra hours worked above 10 hours is eligible for the premium, until the four-week period resets:

Max Threshold Reached? No Yes Yes Yes

The table above shows all of the employee’s shifts in the four-week period. In the period’s first two weeks, the employee exceeds the 10-hour shift limit eight times. After the eight-day threshold is reached, the employee is eligible for a premium for any hours worked over the 10-hour threshold in Weeks 3 and 4. When Week 4 ends, the period resets, as well as the eight-day threshold.

Based on the shifts worked, the employee is eligible for an overtime rate for extra hours worked on the Monday and Friday of Week 3, and the Tuesday and Thursday of Week 4.
