The Pay Code Cascade By Balance Rule is used to define how balance cascades are recorded on the timesheet. A balance cascade is used to link two balances together so that when one balance runs out, Dayforce knows which balance to deduct from next.
Note: Balance cascades between the appropriate balances must be configured in Dayforce for the rule to function. A cascade must be configured in the Cascades section of the Balances tab in Pay Setup > Balances that describes the relationship between the two balances.
The rule is used to change the pay code and, if appropriate, the pay category of the cascaded portion of a balance recorded on the timesheet. The Pay Code Cascade By Balance Rule defines which pay code and pay category are used on the cascaded portion.
Important: When you have more than two balances in your cascade, you must create a separate Pay Code Cascade By Balance Rule for each balance cascade. As well, each instance of the rule must specify the same initial starting balance. For example, if the starting balance for the entire cascade is Vacation Hours, each instance of the rule would specify the Vacation pay code in the Cascade from pay codes setting and the Vacation Hours balance in the Cascade from balance setting. See Example 2 below for more information about using multiple balances in your cascade.
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Cascade from pay codes | Select which pay codes trigger the cascade. |
Cascade from balance | Select which balance the cascade comes from. |
Cascade to pay code | Select which pay code Dayforce applies to the cascaded portion of time. This should be the pay code associated with the balance that is being cascaded to. |
Cascade to pay category | Optionally, select which pay category the rule applies to the cascaded portion of the time. |
Cascade to balance |
When a cascade goes into multiple balances, use this drop-down list to specify the target balance for each instance of the rule. Then, add as many instances of the rule as necessary to implement your organization’s needs. See Example 2 below. Note: When configuring a pay policy with multiple Pay Code Cascade By Balance Rules, you must order the rules in the opposite order that the balance cascade occurs. For example, if Balance A cascades to Balance B, and then to Balance C, you would configure the pay policy so that the rule that represents the cascade from Balance A to Balance C is listed before the rule that cascades Balance A to Balance B. |
Apply pay category multiplier | Select the checkbox to apply the multiplier of the pay category to the cascaded portion of time. Clear the checkbox and the multiplier isn’t applied to the cascaded portion of time. |
Pay Code Cascade By Balance Rule Examples
Example 1: Business Needs
When employees have used their sick balance, the balance cascades to the vacation balance, so that when an employee without any sick days left takes another sick day, Dayforce deducts the day from their vacation balance. The cascaded portion of time is recorded on the timesheet under the “Vacation” pay code.
Example 1: Configuration
To configure the rule for this example:
- In the Cascade from pay codes drop-down list, click Sick.
- In the Cascade from balance drop-down list, click Sick Hours.
- In the Cascade to pay code drop-down list, click Vacation.
To support the rule’s functionality, the Sick Hours balance is configured to cascade into the Vacation Hours balance in the Cascades section of the Balances tab in Pay Setup > Balances:
Example 1: Results
An employee has a balance of 10 hours of sick time, and makes a request to use 20 hours of sick time. Because this debits more hours than the employee has sick time, the balance cascades and debits the vacation balance:
The cascaded portion of the time is assigned the Vacation pay code:
Example 2: Business Needs
When an employee runs out of sick time, Dayforce should deduct from the employee’s vacation time. If the employee also runs out of vacation time, Dayforce should then deduct from the employee’s personal days.
Example: Configuration
To implement this example, we need to configure two instances of the Pay Code Cascade By Balance Rule: one that cascades from sick days to vacation days, and one that cascades from sick days to personal days. Although Dayforce cascades to vacation days before it cascades to personal days, the rules must be configured in the opposite order in the appropriate pay policy.
To configure the rule that cascades from sick days to personal days:
- In the Cascade from pay codes setting, click Sick.
- In the Cascade from balance drop-down list, click Sick.
- In the Cascade to pay code drop-down list, click Personal.
- In the Cascade to balance drop-down list, click Personal.
Repeat the configuration described above for the rule that cascades from sick days to personal days by replacing Vacation where Personal was entered:
- In the Cascade from pay codes setting, click Sick.
- In the Cascade from balance drop-down list, click Sick.
- In the Cascade to pay code drop-down list, click Vacation.
- In the Cascade to balance drop-down list, click Vacation.
Example: Results
An employee has a balance of two sick days, one vacation day, and three personal days. The employee makes a request to use four sick days. Because this debits more days than the employee has sick time, the balance cascades and debits two days of sick balance, one day of vacation balance, and one day of personal balance.
