Participant Definitions

Before You Begin: Relationship types must be configured with the appropriate Is Child, Is Spouse, or Is Legal Partnership checkboxes selected, and assigned to the appropriate Benefits Group in HR Admin > Relationship Types to calculate participant eligibility accurately. See Relationship Type Setup.

You can configure the participants who can enroll in a health or life and disability option. Configuring participants is optional.

When Dayforce calculates benefits eligibility, it considers the participant definition configured for the plan option into account, so that:

  • For options that need employees to associate all qualified dependents with the option:
    • If an employee doesn’t have any dependents on record, they aren’t considered eligible for that option, even if they meet all other eligibility requirements.
    • If an employee's dependents don’t meet the eligibility requirements, they aren't considered eligible to participate in the option.
  • For options that don't need employees to associate all qualified dependents with the option:
    • If an employee meets the eligibility requirements, they can select the option. For example, if a family plan option doesn’t need associating all qualified dependents with the option, employees are eligible for the option and don't have to designate dependents for the plan at the time of the election.
    • Employees can enroll any qualifying dependents, if they have the number of participants allowed to enroll in the option.

Important: You can’t configure participants for a plan if the Auto Enroll checkbox is selected in the option setup, because the employee is automatically enrolled in the option and can’t manually elect that option during the enrollment process. The Auto Enroll checkbox is available in the setup for life and disability plan options. See Life and Disability Option Coverage Settings.

The following sections describe the settings in the Participant Definition tab of health or life and disability options, and the process to add participants.
