The Meal Break Premium Continuous Rule pays a premium to employees that don’t receive a specified amount of continuous meal or break times during their shift. If an employee doesn’t take a meal break within the specified time frame, they’re paid a premium until either the meal break is taken, or the shift ends. The premium is awarded as a payout for a configurable number of minutes at a specified rate.
This rule determine a shift’s start time by capturing the first pay segment that’s marked with a pay code configured in the rule’s Pay codes eligible as work setting. If a shift contains a tardy resolution code (for example, to mark a late start), the rule excludes that segment when determining the shift start time because it represents unpaid and unworked time.
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Minutes worked threshold (=>) | The minimum number of minutes that an employee must work in a day for the rule to apply. |
Minutes minimum contiguous for meal (=>) | The minimum number of contiguous minutes of unworked time that are then considered a meal break. |
Meal must start after (>) Meal must start before (<=) |
Use these settings to configure when a meal is due and when it should be taken. When the shift exceeds the start threshold set by the Minutes worked threshold (=>) value, then a meal should be taken on or after the time set by the Meal must start after (>) value, but not later than the Meal must start before (<=) value. |

Use these settings to configure how the meal penalty is paid, either as a multiplied rate or an incremental rate. For example, to award a premium that is paid at twice the employee’s pay rate, enter 2 in the Meal penalty rate value field, and select Multiplier in the Meal penalty rate type drop-down list. Similarly, to award a premium that is paid at $3 more than the employee's pay rate, enter 3 in the Meal penalty rate value field, and select Incremental in the Meal penalty rate type drop-down list. |
