Management by Job Assignment Overview

As an optional feature, you can configure management by job assignment to define an employee's manager based on their primary job assignment, such as an employee working a Sales Associate job assignment that is managed by an employee working the Sales Manager job assignment.

Job assignment management is configured in the Headcount Allocations subsection of the Assignments section of a job assignment's details in the Jobs and Job Assignments tab of Org Setup > Jobs and Job Assignments. When you create a head count allocation record in this section, you need to select a job assignment in the Managing Job Assignments drop-down list.

Job assignment management needs to be configured for individual locations. To define job assignment hierarchy for a job assignment that is associated with multiple locations, you must configure a separate head count allocation record for each location. Also, the work assignment of the manager and employee being managed must be at the same org unit.

Management by job assignment is optional, and the configuration can be used in addition to the other management hierarchy configurations. When multiple configurations are used, Dayforce sets the following order of precedence to determine employee management:

  1. Direct management
  2. Job assignment management
  3. Derived by org

Note: You can run the Employee Manager Recalc background job to keep management assignments by job assignment up to date. In the Org Units setting of the background job's parameters, you must select the specific location of the head count allocation record.

Example

In the Headcount Allocations section of the Sales Associate job assignment, you create a head count allocation for the Toronto site. For this record, you select Sales Manager in the Managing Job Assignments drop-down list.

Stacey Jacobs works the Sales Manager job assignment at the Toronto - Sales onsite department of the Toronto site. Also at the Toronto - Sales department of this site, Michael Collins works the Sales Associate job assignment. As such, Stacy is automatically Michael's manager based on her job assignment.

In the Managers section of the Work > Management Assignments screen of Michael's profile in People, Stacy is shown as his manager. Also, the Derivation Method column of the record shows Job Assignment and is read-only:

Manager record in People showing the "Job Assignment" derivation method.
