Jobs and Job Assignments Background

In Dayforce, jobs, job assignments, and departments are key values that are defined as follows:

  • Job: A general set of duties that employees are eligible to perform such as Analyst, Director, Coordinator, and Manager.
  • Job Assignment: A specific instance of a job that is tied to a department.
  • Department: A generic area that can exist across your organization, like Finance, Marketing, Sales, and HR. See Departments Overview.

Jobs, job assignments, and departments form a hierarchy where a job is a template for a set of job assignments under it that are each tied to a department.

For example, the Clerk job can contain the Meat Clerk, Produce Clerk and Seafood Clerk job assignments, which are assigned to the Meat, Produce, and Seafood departments. This hierarchy is represented in the left sidebar in the Jobs and Job Assignments tab:
