Departments Overview

In Dayforce, there is a distinction between departments and the on-site department level org units that are part of an organizational hierarchy. On-site departments are a combination of a site and a department. For example, while Sales is a generic department, the Orlando Sales on-site department is an org unit where employees work.

Departments are configured in the Departments tab in Org Setup > Organization, and on-site departments are configured in the Organization tab of Org Setup > Organization.

Job Assignments and org units can both be assigned a department. A department creates a link between job assignments and the org units where a job assignment can be worked. A job assignment can only be worked in org units that have the same department assigned.

For job assignments, the department is assigned in the Department drop-down list of the Assignments section in the Jobs and Job Assignments tab in Org Setup > Jobs and Job Assignments. In this example, the Produce Clerk job assignment is assigned to the Produce department:

Org unit selected in the left panel and the Department drop-down list.

For org units, the department is assigned in the Department drop-down list of the General tab in the Organization tab of Org Setup > Organization. In this example, the Produce department is assigned to the Store 320 - Produce org unit:

Organization tab with an org unit selected in the left panel and a department selected.

Continuing this example, the Produce Clerk job assignment can be worked at the Store 320 - Produce because both the job assignment and the org unit are assigned the Produce department. The job assignment can also be worked at other org units that have the Produce department selected.
