Create Merchandising Departments

In Dayforce, merchandising departments are used to track sales by assigning products to the appropriate department. Products in stores are often organized by departments. For example, an electronics store might have a computer department and a home theater department. When customer service puts through the sale of a television, the sale is linked in the Point-of-Sales (POS) system with the home theater department. Merchandising departments are used in Dayforce to link this POS data with the corresponding zone. As Dayforce uses zones for labor planning and scheduling, it’s important to link the two so that accurate data can be used for labor planning.

Note: Although a retail company’s use of merchandising departments is a common example, departments can be configured for organizations in other industries to track drivers for the labor budget as well. For example, the number of transactions in a bank branch, tied to different areas of the branch, can be used to set up merchandising departments which track the transactions and link them to appropriate zones in the bank.

You create as many merchandising departments as you need in Org Setup > Zones Configuration. The higher the number of departments locations track their sales against, the more merchandising departments you'll need to set up.

To define a merchandising department:

  1. Go to Org Setup > Zones Configuration and click the MDSE Departments tab.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter a name and, optionally, a description of the merchandising department.
  4. Enter a reference code in the Reference Code field. This code must be unique and must not contain special characters.
  5. Important: If you are linking the merchandising department in Dayforce with a department tracked by your POS system, this needs to be the same code the POS system uses to mark sales from the department. That way, sales data is correctly attributed to the merchandising department in Dayforce.
  6. Click Save.

Next, you need to link it to a zone in the Zone MDSE Department tab.
