An organization requires that its employees are granted one of the following:
- Two consecutive days off in a week
- Three consecutive days off in a two-week period
When an employee works and one of the above conditions isn’t met, the organization wants to convert the appropriate worked days to overtime, until the minimum number of consecutive days off are met. The organization’s employees earn a base rate of $10 per hour, and are entitled to a separate premium at the same rate for any worked days that violate the minimum consecutive days off requirement.
Configuration
To configure this rule to support these requirements:
- Specify an appropriate period start date in the Period Start Date field.
- In the Period Length in Weeks field, enter 2.
- In the Min Consecutive Days Off per week to comply field, enter 2.
- In the Min Consecutive Days Off per Period to comply field, enter 3.
- (Optional) Use the Pay codes eligible as unworked hours and Pay categories eligible as unworked hours selection lists to specify the pay codes and categories that shouldn’t be considered “worked time.”
- (Optional) Use the Pay codes ineligible for conversion and Pay categories ineligible for conversion selections lists to specify the pay codes and categories that are ineligible for premium conversion. When Dayforce detects days marked with these pay codes and categories, the days aren’t converted to a daily premium (for example, overtime), even when the days are considered “worked.”
- In the Pay Code to assign selection list, specify the pay codes that the rule assigns to the worked days that are converted to a daily premium.
- In the Pay Category to assign selection list, specify the pay categories that the rule assigns to the worked days that are converted to a daily premium.
- In the Rate type drop-down list, select Multiplier.
- In the Rate value field, enter 1.
- In the Rate output drop-down list, select SeparatePremium.
Results
Example 1
Norris works the following schedule over four weeks, with an “X” marking days worked:
Evaluation Period | Week | SUN | MON | TUE | WED | THU | FRI | SAT |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Period 1 | Week 1 | X | X | X | X | X | ||
Week 2 | X | X | X | X | X | |||
Period 2 | Week 3 | X | X | X | X | X | ||
Week 4 | X | X | X |
During Period 1, Norris has two consecutive days off in both Weeks 1 and 2, which is compliant with the rule configuration. Further, while he isn’t granted two consecutive days off in Week 3, he is granted three consecutive days off in Week 4, making him compliant in Period 2, as well.
Example 2
Bobby works the following schedule over four weeks, with an “X” marking days worked:
Evaluation Period | Week | SUN | MON | TUE | WED | THU | FRI | SAT |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Period 1 | Week 1 | X | X | X | X | X | ||
Week 2 | X | X | X | X | X | |||
Period 2 | Week 3 | X | X | X | X | |||
Week 4 | X | X | X | X | X | X |
During Period 1, Bobby isn’t granted two consecutive days off in Weeks 1 and 2, nor three consecutive days off for the whole period. This qualifies Bobby for two daily premiums in Period 1.
Dayforce evaluates Period 1 to determine which days are the most suitable to convert to daily premiums. Because Bobby worked the same number of hours every workday and wasn’t granted two days off in a row, Dayforce converts the Thursday and Friday of Week 2 to daily premiums because they're the first eligible set of worked days detected during the lookback evaluation. The rule engine counts back from the last day in the period when evaluating, so it evaluates the Saturday of Week 2 first as it's the last date in Period 1. During its evaluation of Period 1, the rule engine detected no other days that were more suitable than the Saturday of Week 2, so it converts the preceding Thursday and Friday into daily premiums.
To summarize: Bobby earns the following over the course of Period 1:
- Week 1: 5 shifts x ($10 x 8 hours per shift) = $400
- Week 2: 5 shifts x ($10 x 8 hours per shift) + 2 daily premiums x ($10 x 8 hours per premium) = $560
During Period 2, Bobby is granted three consecutive days off at the beginning of Week 3, meaning he is compliant for this period and is ineligible for a premium conversion.
