This section describes how to configure Dayforce to support paying employees who work a “9/80 schedule” appropriately. Typically used to satisfy aspects of Californian labor legislation, under a 9/80 schedule employees work a biweekly pattern where the first week they work nine hours a day for four days, and eight hours on the last day of the week. Then, on the following week, the employee works nine hours a day for four days, and no hours on the last day of the week. This results in the employee working 44 hours on the first workweek of this schedule and 36 hours on the second workweek.
Under a 9/80 schedule, the workday is considered to be split, such as from noon to noon, so that the eight hours on the last day of the first week is split and half of it’s considered to be part of the second week. As a result, the employee is considered to have worked a 40-hour workweek on both weeks. Although intended to support 9/80 schedules, in general the new functionality splits worked time at a specified time on the last day of the week so that any work after the split time is recorded on the following day.
Consider an example where this 9/80 split time is set to 1:00 PM. The employee’s pay group start day is Monday, so workweeks run from Monday to Sunday. When an employee works an eight-hour shift from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with an unpaid 30-minute break at 11:45 AM, on Sunday, Dayforce splits the worked time at 1:00 PM, so that the four hours worked before 1:00 PM are recorded on Sunday and the four hours worked after 1:00 PM are recorded on Monday of the following week.
In the Pay panel in Timesheets, Dayforce shows the eight-hour shift split between Sunday and Monday. In the Daily tab, with Sunday selected, Dayforce displays the four hours from the Sunday shift that occurred before 1:00 PM:
While with Monday selected, the Daily tab in the Pay panel displays the four hours from the Sunday shift that occurred after 1:00 PM:
Dayforce distinguishes time worked on the first day of the week, in this case Monday, from split time from the last day of the previous week using the date in the Start column in the Daily tab:
With Monday selected, the four hours that occurred after the 1:00 PM split time on Sunday and are carried over to Monday are displayed with a Start of “Sun Feb 12” to distinguish this time from the shift the employee actually worked on Monday.
When configured, Dayforce applies any pay rules in the employee’s pay policy normally to the worked time. The four hours after the split time moved from Sunday to Monday are treated the same as hours actually worked on Monday. For example, if the employee earns daily overtime for any time beyond eight hours of work on a day, it’s paid out. Similarly, any weekly overtime considers the hours after the split time to be part of the worked time during the second week.
To configure Dayforce to support 9/80 schedules:
- Configure appropriate pay policies to use the 9/80 split: Selecting the Nine Eighty Split checkbox for pay policies in Pay Setup > Pay Policy enables this functionality. Employees that work 9/80 schedules must be assigned a pay policy with this checkbox selected. See Configure Pay Policies.
- Define 9/80 split times: 9/80 split time values are employee-specific and are configured in People in the Employment > Employee Properties screen. See Define 9/80 Split Time in the HR Administration Guide.
