Configure Shift Definitions for Shift Rotations

Shift definitions govern the times that employees are scheduled in a shift rotation. They’re used in shift rotations so that Dayforce can automatically schedule an employee to the same repeating pattern. You can configure as many shift definitions in Scheduling Plan as your organization routinely schedules its employees to work.

Role feature access: Schedule Planning > Scheduling Plan > Shift Setup > Shift Definitions

To configure a shift definition:

  1. Go to Scheduling Plan > Shift Setup and click the Shift Definitions tab.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter a name, description, start time, end time, display code, and reference code. Reference codes must be unique and must not contain special characters.
  4. In the Meals and Breaks section:
    1. Click Add.
    2. In the Type drop-down list, select Break or Meal.
    3. In the Earliest Start and Latest End fields, enter the time range during which the employee can take the break.
    4. In the Duration (minutes) field, enter the break’s duration.
    5. Note: You can configure Dayforce to apply different validation rules to meals or breaks. Meal and break validations are controlled by time entry policies, configured in Pay SetupTime Entry Policy. See Time Entry Policies.
    6. (Optional) Enter a cross-reference code.
  5. Click Save.
