Business Units

- New Organization Designer user interface -

Business units form the functional structure of the organization that keeps track of filled and vacant positions. The business unit hierarchy represents a functional structure that is separate from actual locations. All of the positions in your organization are associated with a business unit.

You can build and manage your organization’s business units in the Business Units screen of Organization Designer. Each card in the hierarchy shows the metrics for a business unit in your organization:

Business unit card.

The business unit card shows the following details about the business unit and the positions associated with it:

  • Headcount: The total number of vacant and filled positions. Positions with overfill are counted as one in the headcount total, even if they have two occupants. If your organization uses pooled positions, the headcount includes the occupant limit for each pooled position.
  • Filled: The total number of occupants in the business unit’s positions, including all non-interim occupants. For overfill and pooled positions, each occupant is added individually in this total.
  • Vacant: The number of vacancies in the business unit’s positions. This number includes all unoccupied positions. If your organization uses pooled positions, it includes all remaining vacancies for those positions.
  • Rollup Information: This section shows the number of positions in all of the business units nested under the selected one in the business unit hierarchy. Use the arrow next to the heading to expand the section. The Filled and Vacant percentages in the Rollup Information section include all of the occupants and vacancies for all of the positions.

You can move a business unit in the hierarchy by dragging it to a new location. When you move a business unit, the date of the change depends on the date selected in the as of date field. For example, to move a business unit starting June 1st, set the as of date field to 6/1, and then move the business unit card. Doing so can update the business unit's metrics, depending on where you place it. If it’s at the lowest level of the hierarchy, no metrics are updated because the positions don’t change. However, the roll-up information of the new parent business unit is updated, even though it's not the one you moved.

You can delete a business unit if it has never had any positions assigned to it—currently, in the past, or with a future date. When you delete a business unit that has units nested under it in the hierarchy, all of the business units under it are also deleted.
