Break Attestation Settings

When configured, break attestation functionality allows employees to report missed rest periods when clocking out, or have a manager attest on their behalf. This allows them to be considered for a pay premium for the extra time worked.

Before You Begin: In addition to configuring break attestation with the following settings, you must configure the Break Premium Rule in pay policies, because this rule pays employees a premium for extra time worked. See Break Premium Rule.

Settings in the General section of the Break Attestation tab
Setting Description
Break Attestation

Select an option to both enable break attestation in Dayforce, and configure how many breaks an employee can attest were missed during a shift. The drop-down list options are:

  • None: Disable break attestation functionality in Dayforce. This is the default selection.
  • Single: Allow employees and managers to report that a single break was missed per shift.
  • Multiple: Require that employees and managers report the number of breaks taken per shift, when appropriate. When this functionality is enabled, the employee or manager must specify the exact number of breaks taken when clocking out on a Dayforce clock or recording their worked time in timesheet features.
Attestation Type Required

Select the attestation type you want to enable. The drop-down list options are:

  • No Attestation: Select this option if you want attestation functionality to look at clock entries and not require employee or manager input.
  • Important: You shouldn’t select this attestation type if you have multiple break attestation configured. In a scenario where this option is selected and multiple break attestation is configured, the Break Premium Rule can’t detect employee and manager attestations when evaluating eligibility and employees will not be granted premiums for missed breaks.
  • Employee: Select this option if you want to assign an employee the ability to attest breaks.
  • Manager: Select this option if you want to assign a manager the ability to attest breaks.
  • Manager AND Employee: Select this option if you want break attestation functionality to require input from both a manager and an employee.
  • Manager OR Employee: Select this option if you want break attestation functionality to require input from either a manager or an employee.
Major Fractions Allowed

Select this checkbox to enable Dayforce to use major fractions when calculating breaks:

  • For this functionality to work correctly, the shift length must not be less than the minimum shift length. With this option enabled, the Total Entitled Breaks = Entitled Breaks + Entitled Extra Break, with the Entitled Breaks = Total Worked Minutes / Minimum Worked Minutes, rounded down to an integer, and the Entitled Extra Break = the remainder of Total Worked Minutes % Minimum Worked Minutes. If the remainder is greater than or equal to 0.5, the Entitled Extra Break is 1. If the remainder is lesser than 0.5, the Entitled Extra Break is 0.
  • When this checkbox is cleared, the Total Entitled Breaks = Total Worked Minutes / Minimum Worked Minutes, rounded down to an integer.
  • Note: The percentage symbol (%) in these formulas is a modulus operator, which finds the remainder after division of one number by another. It operates differently depending on programming language. In this instance, it follows C# programming language disciplines.
Split Shift Qualify Select this checkbox to enable Dayforce to sum up all of the worked minutes in one business day when calculating the entitled breaks.
Minimum Worked Minutes Enter the minimum number of minutes employees must work to qualify for the premium.
Offset for Minimum Worked Minutes

Enter the number of minutes you want to offset the minimum worked minutes by to determine when employees qualify for a premium. For example, if you enter 120 in the Minimum Worked Minutes field and 1 in the Offset for Minimum Worked Minutes field, employees will be eligible for a premium at 121 minutes.

Note: The Offset for Minimum Worked Minutes setting is only applicable if the Apply offset for minimum worked minutes checkbox is enabled in the Break Premium Rule in Pay Setup > Time Entry Policy and the Major Fraction Allows checkbox is enabled in the Break Attestation tab of Pay Setup > Time Entry Policy.

Minimum Shift Length Enter the minimum shift length to qualify for the premium.
Minimum Break Minutes Enter the minimum number of minutes that a break must be to qualify as a rest period. If a break is taken that's less than the total minimum break minutes, it isn’t considered a break.
Gap threshold at which periods are no longer contiguous Enter the number of minutes required between two shifts so that they're not contiguous. If the gap between two shifts is less than the gap threshold, the two shifts are considered contiguous. If the gap is larger than the gap threshold, they are considered two separate shifts.
