You can define eligibility rules that determine which employees can enroll in a plan. Additional eligibility qualifiers can be associated with each coverage period and option, to further refine eligibility. You can add as many predefined qualifiers as necessary to define eligibility for a plan.
Note: When you attach multiple eligibility qualifiers to a single coverage period or option, employees that meet the requirements of either qualifier are eligible for that coverage period or option.
If a plan or option contains one or more dependent qualifiers that aren’t part of an operator qualifier, then a dependent can only be covered in the plan or option if the employee has at least one dependent that meets the eligibility of the assigned dependent qualifier.
Example: If you assign an Employee & Family option with the following eligibility qualifiers:
- Employee qualifier of active status
- Dependent qualifier of spouse
- Dependent qualifier of domestic partner
An active employee with only child dependents are eligible for the option based on meeting any eligibility qualifier. However, they can’t assign child dependents for option coverage as they don’t have a spouse or domestic partner dependent.
For more information on qualifier types, see Benefit Plan Qualifier Library.
To add an eligibility qualifier to a plan or option:
- Go to Benefits Setup > Plans and Options.
- In the left sidebar, click the plan or option to which you want to add the qualifier.
- Click the Plan Eligibility tab or the Option Eligibility tab and then Add.
- In the Add Qualifier dialog box, enter the name of a qualifier in the Name field and find the qualifier you're looking for. You should only add active qualifiers; if the qualifier that you want to add is inactive, you must make it active first by selecting the Active checkbox in the qualifier in Benefits Setup > Eligibility.
- Select the checkboxes for one or more qualifiers.
- Click Add. Dayforce lists all of the selected qualifiers in the qualifier list.
- Click Save.

After you've assigned eligibility for plans and options, you can verify employee eligibility using the Eligibility Test Tool. Information on the tool and how to run a test are outlined in the next two sections:
