Apply Job Step Policy Rule

The Apply Job Step Policy Rule is used to implement the expanded version of the job rate set functionality in Dayforce. Job rate sets and levels must already be configured in order for this rule to have any effect. See Job Rate Sets.

After job rate sets and levels have been configured using the expanded configuration method, the Apply Job Step Policy Rule must be assigned to the appropriate pay policies. For Dayforce to know when to pay an employee using their job set rate, every pay policy that is assigned to employees should include at least one instance of the Apply Job Step Policy Rule.

The rule applies the appropriate job step rate to employee’s work details, pay adjustments, and, optionally, premiums in cases where this rate is higher than the employee’s base rate. For example, the rule can be configured to use the employee’s job set rate for time under the “Work” pay code, but not for time under the “Training” pay code.

Apply Job Step Policy Rule settings
Setting Description
Default Job Set Rate

The default job set rate that Dayforce uses to pay out premiums that are generated by other rules in the pay policy. The options are:

  • Base Rate: The rate that’s generated by the employee’s job step policy. This is the default selection.
  • PrimaryWorkAssignment: The base rate that’s configured in the employee’s primary work assignment.
Premiums eligible for rate set With this checkbox selected, Dayforce uses the rate from an employee’s job rate set when paying out premiums.
Secondary jobs always override base rate

With this checkbox selected, employees are always paid their job step rate for secondary jobs instead of their base rate, even when the base rate is higher.

For example, with this checkbox selected, an employee with a $17 base rate, a $15 job step rate for their primary job, and a $13 job step rate for a secondary job would be paid the $13 rate when they worked their secondary job.

Note: If the Use Primary Job Rate checkbox is selected in the Add Transfer dialog box when an employee transfers from a primary to a secondary job, the ability to override the base rate is inherited from the rate of the primary job. This means that if the Override Base Rate checkbox is cleared for the employee’s primary rate, Dayforce pays the employee the highest of their primary, secondary, or base rate. Continuing the example above, that means the employee would be paid their $17 base rate. Conversely, if the Override Base Rate checkbox is selected for the employee’s primary rate, Dayforce pays the employee the higher of either their primary or secondary rate. This means that in the example above, the employee would be paid their $15 primary rate.

Work Assignment rate takes precedence

With this checkbox selected, an employee is always paid the rate associated with their work assignment, regardless of whether it’s higher or lower than the rate associated with their current job set level.

For example, you could use this functionality to configure an instance of this rule that specifies that employees working a particular job are always paid their work assignment rate, while employees working other jobs are paid according to their job set level.

Note: When this checkbox is selected, Dayforce applies the employee’s work assignment rate only if it’s higher than their base rate.

Pay Codes eligible
Pay Codes not eligible
Pay Categories eligible
Pay Categories not eligible
The pay codes and pay categories that are eligible or ineligible to be paid using the employee’s job set rate.
Always use primary job set rate Select this checkbox and the rule uses the employee’s primary job rate set, regardless of what actual job is worked, and regardless of whether the rate that would be calculated for the secondary job is higher or lower than the primary.
Enforce “Use primary job rate” setting during transfer

Select this checkbox and Dayforce pays employees using their primary rate for all hours worked at a secondary location after performing a transfer, rather than applying the rate to only the employee’s scheduled hours .

For example, say an employee is scheduled to work from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The employee works from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM at their secondary location, so you perform a transfer on their behalf in Timesheets with the Use primary job rate checkbox selected in the add/edit transfer dialog box. When the Enforce “Use primary job rate” setting during transfer setting is enabled in their pay policy, Dayforce applies their primary rate to all hours worked, including the 30 minutes of overtime, rather than applying their secondary rate to the extra time worked.
