Before You Begin: Dayforce doesn’t come with any preconfigured competencies. You need to manually add all competencies in the Competencies tab.
You can build and manage a competency library for your organization in the Competencies tab of Performance Setup > Competency Setup, as shown in the following screenshot:
The top section of the screen is where you add competencies. The bottom section of the screen is where you define additional details about the selected competency, including behaviors and assigned jobs. The application displays all of the competencies that you and other users have already created.
There are three different ways you can configure competencies in the Competencies tab:
- You can create core competencies. These competencies are assigned to all employees in your organization, by default. You define whether a competency is core in its details.
- You can associate competencies with jobs, so that all employees currently under that job are assigned the competency by default. However, if they change jobs, they are no longer assigned to the competency.
- You can allow managers to manually assign competencies to their employees, in the same way they do with goals. After you've created competencies, managers assign them to employees in the Competencies tab of Performance.
Most organizations will typically create a set of one or more core competencies. Moreover, depending on their needs, they will either create a set of job-based competencies, or they will instead opt to allow individual managers to assign competencies to their teams. It's also possible to use a combination where employees are assigned job-based competencies, and managers can assign them additional competencies from the library.
Effective Start and Effective End Date
Competencies can have an effective start and end date; however, both are optional. If you configure an effective start and end date, employees and managers will only see this competency in their dashboard (for example, in the My Competencies feature) within this period.
However, if a competency start or end date is within the start and end date of a review cycle, it still appears in the review form. For example, if a competency is start and end dated within this year's review cycle, the competency still appears in the review form.
