In the Content Builder section, you add questions or statements to the survey. Dayforce retrieves the questions and statements that you configured in Site Setup > Clock SurveysSurvey Question Setup. Questions and statements that you configured with the Single Response response type are already associated with answers. Informational messages that you configured with the Broadcast response type don’t have any responses available.

You can add as many questions and statements as required and manually rearrange their placement in the hierarchy. You can also configure questions and statements so that they’re an optional part of the clock survey.

There are two types of hierarchies that you can use to structure your survey questions.

Clock survey hierarchy types
Hierarchy Type Description
Linear

A simplified, straightforward hierarchy. When you configure a survey with multiple questions using the linear hierarchy, the clock shows the questions chronologically based on the hierarchy order.

For more information on linear hierarchies, see Linear Hierarchies.

Nested

A complex hierarchy that branches out depending on specific survey responses. When you configure a nested survey with multiple questions, the questions that the clock shows can be context-sensitive and based on the employee’s response.

For example, you can configure the survey so that if an employee selects Question A’s first response, the clock shows Question B. Alternatively, if the employee selects Question A’s second response, the clock shows Question C.

Click the Nested Questions checkbox to configure a nested hierarchy.

Important:

  • The Nested Questions checkbox is available only when you configure a new clock survey. You can’t change the hierarchy type for an existing survey that was already saved.
  • In surveys with a nested hierarchy, you can’t add questions that are configured with answer types that are associated with the Broadcast response type.

See Nested Hierarchies.

Linear Hierarchies

To configure a linear hierarchy, make sure that the Nested Questions checkbox is cleared. It should be cleared by default when you create a new survey.

Click Add Question to add a question to the survey. When you select one of your preconfigured questions or statements to apply it to the survey, the application automatically populates the answer fields with the answers that are associated with the question (if available).

If necessary, click the button again to add additional survey questions or statements. Dayforce adds each question below the previous question you added in the hierarchy:

You can click and hold the rearrange icon () next to a question to manually change its placement in the hierarchy.

Click the Optional checkbox to make the question or statement optional when the clock prompts employees with the survey. If you make a question or statement optional, employees can skip the question or statement when they’re completing the survey on the clock.

Note: If a survey question or statement is optional and an employee skips it, the clock survey ends, even if one of the response options leads to another question or statement with additional response options. Don’t configure questions or statements as optional if there are more questions and statements in the survey that employees must review and respond to.

Nested Hierarchies

To configure a nested hierarchy, you must first select the Nested Questions checkbox. When selected, the toolstrip updates with additional buttons (Delete Question, Zoom In, and Zoom Out).

Click Add Question to add your first survey question or statement. When you select one of your preconfigured questions to apply it to the survey, the application automatically adds the answers that are associated with the question.

Dayforce adds each question as a workflow node. Each question node contains connectors so that you can link your question nodes together to create branching paths for your survey hierarchy. Click a connector to create a link between a connector in a different question node. After you click the first connector, Dayforce adds a directional link when you click a valid connector in a different question node:

Question node that branches off to another question node when the Yes answer is selected.

In this example screenshot, the survey begins with the “Your clock in/out times...” question. If an employee chooses the Yes response, the clock prompts them with the second question. Alternatively, if an employee chooses the No response, the survey concludes without showing the second question. You can also click the Optional checkbox to make the question or statement optional when the clock prompts employees with the survey.

There are two connector types in each question node:

  • Node connector: Creates incoming links to the question node, or outgoing routing links to another question node:
  • Question node with two incoming and two outgoing node connectors highlighted.
  • The top and left connectors are identical and are used to create an inward link to the question node. The right and bottom connectors are also identical and create an outward link. There are duplicate connectors to support surveys that require multiple inward and outward links.
  • Answer connector: Creates outgoing links based on specific survey answers:
  • Question node with four outgoing answer connectors highlighted.
  • Use this connector to configure the survey to prompt employees with different questions depending on the answer they choose.
  • Note: Each answer contains two identical connectors. There are duplicate connectors to support hierarchies where using the left or right connector makes more sense visually. You can’t output two links from the same answer that route to different question nodes.

When you configure a survey with nested questions, make sure to create links between your question nodes in a logical manner. For example, in the screenshot below, the “Your clock in/out times...” question would never be shown during a survey because the first question contains two responses that each route to a different question:
